April - October
Ride a gondola through the canals; visit St. Mark's Basilica and Doge's Palace (UNESCO); explore Murano (glass-blowing) and Burano (lace) islands; walk the Rialto Bridge and market
Ship docks at Marittima cruise terminal; vaporetto or People Mover to city
Venice is extremely crowded in summer - visit St. Marks very early or late; bridges have steps (not wheelchair accessible); watch for flooding (acqua alta) in autumn/winter; cruise ships have been controversial here
Venice is best explored on foot and getting lost is part of the experience. Avoid restaurants immediately around St. Marks Square (tourist trap prices). Take vaporetto (water bus) instead of gondola for transport - much cheaper.
Risotto al nero di seppie (squid ink); cicchetti (Venetian tapas); fresh pasta; prosecco; tiramisu (invented in Veneto region)
Murano glass; Burano lace; Venetian masks; leather goods on Calle della Mandola
